February 2010 KOFPS Newsletter all articles submitted are from January programs and jams President Notes Blaine Gee Vice President Notes The State Board meeting is over and I think everything went well. Some of us had to fight the fog to get there but we all made it. By afternoon it had cleared up and everyone had a safe trip. We are sorry to hear that Carol Bell has to give up her performance job because of health reasons. You did a great job and we appreciate all the hard work. Let's help the De Soto Chapter by sponsoring a trophy for the convention. Remember it is the last weekend in April and it will also be the annual membership and state board meeting. See you then! Visitors included the Blanton's, Chuck Capen, and Gil Lewis from Spring Hill as well as Lois White and Mike Barbush from Santa Fe Trails. The chapter sold hot dogs, chips, drinks, and cookies and people brought other foods such as a hearty soup and desserts which they generously donated for sale. A big thank you to all who helped with the work! We miss our dear friend Bonnie Thornton, who is taking some time to recover from the recent loss of her husband before returning to our meetings. Please keep her in your prayers. VP Terry Runyan asked for a moment of silence in remembrance of Jerry Thornton and when our turn to sing came Doug sang a couple of songs he loved to hear Jerry sing, "You Gave Me A Mountain" and "I Never Go Around Mirrors" and we sang a duet, "My Baby's Gone" that Jerry had sung with Neva Wittenberg for Convention 2009. We will always remember Jerry, the songs he sang, his talented bass playing, and his delightful sense of humor. Other performances included Darryl Danner's "He'll have to Go" and Suzanne's answer to it "He'll have to Stay." Terry brought a friend, Deborah Lail, who performed for the first time. Please keep Bobby Redding in your prayers. Bobby, who plays a fantastic Jerry Lee Lewis style piano, with almost no eyesight is experiencing additional eye problems. Everyone left the meeting amid dense fog. We are looking forward to better weather. Information on camping and additional motels will be available in the near future. Doug plans to send a questionnaire to each chapter president asking for an estimate of the members planning to attend the convention and how many would eat at the community center. I was at the January State meeting in Emporia. I heard we still have trophies to be sponsored. Sponsor one if you can. It was brought to a yes vote to move the discussion web site from Yahoo Groups to Facebook. You go to www.facebook.com and you will have to join Facebook using your Name and an email address. After joining and signing in, type kofps in the search window on your page and it will take you to the group page. There you can click on the join group tab (you only have to do this once). After joining the group you will receive updates on "your page" (the one that you sign in to). You can ask questions, add comments, etc. on the group page and all members will see it and can answer. At the bottom of the web page there is a "chat" icon that will have a number by it if there is a member online at that time. Click it and it will have the name of the member, click on whom you wish to talk to and a window comes up where you can chat with that person. Have fun and use the site please. Scharlett O'Hara won the beautiful basket of violets donated by Price Chopper. Jim Phillippie manager of our local Price Chopper, generously donates prizes for our Chapter to raise funds. Ida Klinger has been selected as our candidate for the Wanda Smith award. Ida is a great asset to our Chapter. Also we wish to Thank Jo Drennon and Richard Earlenbagh for their expertise in the Kitchen. And a big Thanks to Larry Johnson and Candy Earlenbaugh for their help in cleaning up. All of our Volunteers make our Chapter complete. Our yodeler, Georgeanna, is about to get pulled into the Youth program, hang in there Georgeanna! In addition to the officers listed in last month's newsletter, we also want to recognize Pat Blackwell, who has agreed to write the article again this year, she does a great job! A big "WE APPRECIATE YOU" to all who are willing to take care of the business for our chapter! Our chapter members voted to give $200.00 toward the expenses for 2010 Convention, and to purchase 6 trophies for the band competition in Desoto April 23-25. We are so blessed to be able to help in this way! Members and friends are encouraged to purchase a trophy for the convention if they wish. They are $25.00 each; just contact Joyce, our secretary, 913-592-4592. Welcome to our first time guests: Phil & Ronda Staton and their granddaughter, Elizabeth! It is a joy to welcome a new member and performer: Rodger Lavelock! He also brings to our group his very charming and friendly wife, Cristy. She is already getting acquainted with folks! My sister, Earlene Hamilton, came to sing for us once more. She was very impressed with Chuck Capen's music, he played and sang for us while we ate our meal. Thanks Chuck! There was a total of 54 in attendance, 20 of this number were performers! Spring Hill is happy to have a lot of dedicated singers; Julie Joeckel, Pat & Dave Blackwell, Larry Keeler, Eldon Morrison, Annie Little, Jay Holmgren, Stan Small, and me, Sylvia Landis! We have Bob Fish (harmonica soloist), and several great backup musicians; Chuck Yates (bass), Larry Keeler also, Eldon Landis & Lee Baldwin (lead guitars), and Del Findley (piano). To top that off, we have several musicians that can sing, play & backup: Dale Endicott (guitar), Paul Stamper (violin), Rich Blanton (fiddle), Betty Miller & Sue Hiatt (piano), Chuck Capen (guitar) & Gil Lewis (guitar). Last night there were guests from the De Soto Chapter: Darryl (singer/backup guitarist) & Suzanne Danner (singer), & Jesus (singer) & his wife Donna Velasquez (a great encourager); also an appearance from Sandy (Barnett) Holmes (singer) and her husband Ron (singer/guitar). Of course, a very appreciated person that tries to keep everything at the right levels so we can all enjoy the music is our dedicated sound man, Ray Eldridge. A hearty "THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH" to each of you! If I missed someone, please, please, let me know (Sylvia-913-681-2729) because I will have a chance to get it in next month, and I surely want to do so! Smile. I wouldn't even try to remember and mention by name the many dedicated members and friends who come to just listen and be supportive to all these performers. For without someone to listen, and applaud (say thanks), preparing & performing would be a very empty experience. So a big "THANK YOU" is in order for all who come to be an encouragement to these folks. It's also refreshing to find some who feel it is important to get acquainted with the visitors, this is crucial, if we want to continue to have people want to become active members (supporters) of this chapter. Among our group, we can also boast of a published author, she was 15 when she got her first book published, and is working on a second! Samantha Bennett is a violinist, and singer, and granddaughter of Ray & Virginia. We always enjoy a visit from Roger & Jean Hawkins, who take pictures and get names of performers to put on their web site, check it out, MoKanOpry.com, look under MoKanTravels for the great articles, listed by date! The meal was great as usual, plenty for all, so a hearty "YEAH" to all of the cooks who see to it the table is well supplied and to those who serve and do cleanup! Everyone has fun with the raffle table, which also brings in a little revenue for our chapter. Bring those gifts that need to be recycled, or mildly used items you just need to thin out, every little bit helps. "HIP HIP HOORAY" to all those who remember to supply that table each month, and to Dennis Joeckel for those "YUMMY" cinnamon rolls he makes and brings right out of the oven! Brighten everyone's day with your smile; many are hurting these days, and you might just bring a glimmer of hope to a person who needs the lift! Smile, Sylvia Note to Everyone: Spring Hill will NOT host their additional music jam on the following dates: Friday, April 23, 2010; Friday, November 26, 2010; Friday, December 24, 2010 For more information contact: Julie Joeckel, Spring Hill Chapter President at 913-481-5349 Walnut Valley Chapter First Saturday 5pm Western Plains Chapter Second Sunday 2pm White Eagle Chapter First Sunday 1:30pm, Potluck @ Noon Wildcat Creek Chapter First Thursday 7pm, Potluck @ 6pm Delbert Lampson: jlampson@sktc.net Mon 1/18/2010 7:35 AM Our January 7th get together was canceled due to bad weather.
